I Get A Gold Star

About 3 months ago I decided I wanted to be a runner. I have never liked running because I was not good at it, but I found a great program (couch to 5k), bought myself some new running shoes and decided I was going to do this.

I started out steady and slow, but was not sure it was really going to happen. I stayed to the schedule pretty well, but these last few weeks I kind of hit a wall. I would run 10 minutes, walk 4, run 10, etc. or on a bad day I would run 5 minutes walk 2, run 5, etc. I could run the 10 minutes, but did not feel like I could make it to the next step.

Tonight I DID IT!!!! I finally reached my goal! I ran 3 miles without stopping or slowing down for that matter. It took me 27 minutes and 34 seconds, but that is 27 minutes and 34 seconds of non-stop running! Not only did I run 3 miles without stopping, I felt like I could have kept going. It was so rewarding to finally meet a goal I worked really hard at. I am so proud of myself and feel like I have earned this bit of pride. I truthfully can't believe I did it. I never thought I would be a runner, but tonight I feel like I am finally in the club!

Running is strange in that one day it feels great and I have no problem, but the next day I am struggling to make it to 5 minutes and watching the clock slowly tick. I have a lot to learn about it still, but now that I reached my 3 mile goal, my new goal is to run a 1/2 marathon. I'm not committing to when this will happen, but one day it will.

I can't wait to do it again tomorrow and to all of you non runners out there....if I can do it, you can do it.

I was reading this too fast and I thought it said you were running 10 miles walking 5 miles and running another 10 miles! I was like that is crazy hard core. But I am still super impressed. As I sit on my couch while it snows outside I think to myself this is not for me.

Awesome! Soon you will be running 3 miles a day. No problem. Congrats!

Also, just a helpful hint. I hate looking at the clock as well cause sometimes it will seem like it is going so slow. When I'm on the treadmill I will actually put a towel over the timer so I don't see how long I have been running. It's a good way to forget about how long you have been running or how far you have been running. Try it. I will peak every once in awhile to see where I am at, but I try to only look a couple of times. It makes running go by pretty fast.

I'm so proud of you! I too would love to be a runner, and like you, I have good days and others where it's complete torture! You are lots more dedicated...maybe I need your book! :) When Jo was training for her marathon, I would drive the ASPIRE behind her with music playing really loud....ahhh...the days before ipods! Maybe I'm more of a driver...than a runner! :)
Good work! I will totally drive behind or cheer you on at you 1/2!!

I did the same program- isn't it amazing? I swear it has magic running mojo or something; how else could I explain morphing myself into a runner? My tip: now that you've dont the couch - 5K find some races. It will help you keep pushing yourself and it's way fun! I did a 10K in Sept and am training for a half in Vegas on the 7th... we could be running friends!

Hey Lindsey,
That's awesome. I wanted to say congrates. I have been trying to run for over a year now and I still can't run a full 3 miles with out walking it least for 5 minutes or more. Keep up the good work.
PS - We miss you here at Datamark.
