Why Book Jackets

There is nothing I love better then getting a brand new, best selling, hard cover book. I love reading which is quite a miracle since I could not read until the 3rd grade. I crawl in bed, crack the seal, and....take the book jacket off. Why do they even put book covers on? It is even more baffling when they print the cover on the book and the book jacket. I don't get it. Book jackets are sometimes referred to as dust jackets....come one. Are you really worried about getting the outside of your book dusty?

It they are trying to protect the book and keep it in good condition, let look at what types of wear and tear really affect the book.

1. Water - reading on the beach or in the bathtub have ruined a few of my books
2. Bent Corners - I like to read at night until I am exhausted and sometime I miss judge the distance to my nightstand and the book ends up on the floor
3. Smashed Pages - I like to carry a book with me everywhere I go and anyone that knows me knows my purse is chuck full with a million other things. I have ruined a few books frantically digging through my purse to find my phone.

I don't see how a book jacket would prevent any of these things, but what can you do. For now, I will keep buying books and keep taking off their book jackets while I read them.
